Poonch Attack: Biggest security, intelligence failure of this decade
Jammu, : Over 72 hours have passed after a group of terrorists, in a worst-ever attack, martyred five soldiers including one Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of the Army but there is no fresh contact with the hiding ultras.
It is believed that after ambushing the patrol party of the Army, terrorists have managed to give a slip to the forces despite the tight cordon of the area.
The Poonch incident was the biggest ever security and intelligence failure as terrorists were hiding in the forest areas for two to three months.
First time after more than 15 years, the Army faced such a huge number of casualties in the hinterland of the twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri. Earlier attacks on troops were confined only along the Line of Control.
Highly placed sources said that security agencies were much aware that infiltration was going unabated in twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri but the J&K administration has taken a casual approach towards these reports.
Terrorists were hiding in forests for 2-3 months but intelligence agencies were unaware
Even after 72 hours no fresh contact established with terrorists
cting reports that terrorists involved in killing five soldiers have recently infiltrated from the Line of Control (LoC), a source said that there is a possibility that terrorists may have been present in the area for the last two-three months. “Due to the topography of the area, it is difficult to predict how many terrorists are hiding in the forest”, he said.
Reports said that the encounter site is quite far from the LoC so there are fewer chances that the terrorists could be a part of the freshly infiltrated group.
“It appeared that the terrorists were hiding in the forests for quite some time and might have set up their hideout in the forests,” reports said but added that the things would be clear only when the terrorists are killed, and troops destroy their hideout.(The Awam News)
