Superboys of Malegaon Review: A Heartfelt Ode to Cinema That Will Make You Laugh, Cry, and Reflect

Superboys of Malegaon Review: I just saw Superboys of Malegaon, and let me tell you, it’s one of those films that hits you in all the right ways. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll think. It’s a love letter to cinema, wrapped up in this brilliant, offbeat story. Reema Kagti seriously nailed it with this one.

Okay, so the movie is about this guy Nasir (played by Adarsh Gourav) in Malegaon in the 90s. He’s obsessed with old English films, like Charlie Chaplin, while the whole town is all about those over-the-top Hindi masala movies. His movie parlour gets shut down by the cops (thanks to pirated films), so he decides, screw it, he’s gonna make his own movie. Yup, Malegaon ka Sholay—just like that. And, of course, his friends get involved—Shafique (Shashank Arora), Farogh (Vineet Kumar Singh), and Akram (Anuj Singh Duhan). You’re gonna wanna see what happens next, trust me.

This film has that movie-about-making-a-movie vibe, you know? Which is already a genre I love. And hey, the Akhtars (Zoya and Reema Kagti) are behind this, so it’s legit. It’s also based on a real story, which is just wild. At the end, they even show the real guys, and you’re like, “Wait, that really happened?!”

The script is solid—credit to Varun Grover for that. It’s got everything: humor, emotion, and all these moments that make you think. The pacing is great too—no boring parts. We start in 1994, jump to 2004, and then 2010. Each time jump feels totally earned, like it’s telling us something important.

What really works though is the performances. Adarsh Gourav and Shashank Arora? Total magic. Gourav brings this fiery passion, while Arora’s got this innocent charm that totally works. There’s this scene where Shafique just wants to fly an airplane—dream big, right? And it’s just shot so beautifully. Big shoutout to Swapnil S. Sonawane for that.

The finale? Oh man, you’ll need tissues. It’s emotional. Like, you can’t help but get caught up in it all.

And hey, you can totally feel Javed Akhtar’s influence here. The guy’s a legend in the industry, and the film kinda channels that “take us seriously” vibe, like the Salim-Javed duo back in the day. Speaking of which, Vineet Kumar Singh’s also doing so well lately (after Chhaava), and his role in this just adds to the whole experience. The whole cast deserves props, honestly.

So yeah, to sum it up: Superboys of Malegaon is a must-watch. It’s a love letter to films, to that raw, genuine joy that comes from watching something you just get. The film industry’s been all about franchises and sequels, but this film’s a reminder that sometimes people just want to be entertained. Even if it’s something as ridiculous as Himesh Reshammiya’s Badass Ravikumar. Just have fun, right?
